Someone told me to remove my own IUD. Is that really a thing?

This is a great question. The short answer is no. It is always safer to have your IUD removed by a professional. It is easier and faster when done by a doctor. If you can’t get in to your regular reproductive health provider and you feel that it is an emergency, try going into an Urgent Care clinic. The only time you should attempt to remove your IUD is if it has been completely expelled from your uterus and you can feel the entire device in your vagina, then you may remove it. However if the device is half expelled, or half in your vagina, half in your uterus, make sure to see a provider immediately and do not try to remove it on your own. Attempting to remove an IUD by yourself can cause perforation of the uterus, or other complications. Have more questions? Give us a call at 1-877-275-6123.
